Recent years have seen a decline in diverticular surgery in those surgeons who are aware of the evidence of continued symptoms after elective "diverticular" operations.  The overlap of diverticular and irritable bowel symptoms is great, thus avoidance of the "treatment being worse than the disease" syndrome is paramount.
